Trip Overview

“ Put your footsteps at the highest mountain base camp of the world, Everest Base Camp”

Everest Base Camp Trek is widely popular as all time top rated adventure trekking among the trekkers. Venturing on the legendary trail through Sagarmatha National Park and stepping on the world’s highest mountain base camp will, definitely, be a lifetime experience. As long as you are in Everest/Khumbu region, you will delightfully celebrate this spectacular walk with incredible valleys, landscapes, local villages, lush woods and vast Himalayan ranges. The most dominant views of mountain peaks you are going to capture during this trek are: Mt. Everest, Loatse, Nupse, Pumori, Changse , Lhotse, Amadablam and Thamserkhu. Most importantly, you are going to witness Mt. Everest, the top of the world just in front of your eyes.

Trekkers also will have magnificent time during their Everest Base Camp Trek while walking through local villages, testing local food items and spending the nights in local lodges, enjoying refreshing air in the wild nature, acknowledging local Sherpa culture and their civilization, visiting holy monasteries and ascending up to popular viewpoints.

Route Description

Majority of trekkers choose to fly Lukla directly from Kathmandu to begin Everest Base Camp Trek. Few trekkers also like to begin it from Jiri or, now, from Salleri or Aiselukharka with a long drive from Kathmandu. Those who love to enjoy unspoiled wilderness of lower Everest region before they get to the main trail to Everest Base Camp choose this option.  Otherwise, people directly fly to Lukla spending 35 minutes on it and begin their walk towards Everest Base Camp.

Passing through Lukla town and some lush forest, we arrive at Phakding. Phakding is a beautiful town next to Lukla with few local lodges which is the place for spending the first night during Everest Base Camp Trek. We entrer into Sagarmatha National Park after we pass Monjo. Then, we can experience various species of flora and fauna in Sagarmatha National Park.

Arriving at Namche Bazar will mesmerize us because you don’t believe to seeing a magnificent town with modern shops, beauty salons, banks, ATMS, hotels and pharmacies. You will also climb up to Hotel Everest View and capture spectacular Everest before heading towards Everest Base Camp. Next, exploring sacred Tengboche monastery located at Tengboche will be another memorable experience during this trek. After we pass Tengboche, we enjoy walking through very dense forest of Sagarmatha National Park. Passing through Dingboche and Lobuche, we arrive at Gorekh Shep. Gorekh Shep ways out to both Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar because Gorekhshep is the last settlement on Everest Base Camp Trekking trail.

After capturing the most enigmatic Mt. Everest and other towering mountain summits from Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp, we trek back to Lukla passing Tengboche and Namche. Also, trekkers love to take helicopter flight to Lukla or directly Kathmandu from Kalapatthar while returning back to Lukla or Kathmandu.

Best Weather for the Trek

Definitely, Autumn ( Sep-Nov) will be the most spectacular weather of the year for Everest Base Camp Trek. During this weather, trekkers neither encounter heavy rain nor snow fall. This mild weather favors everyone to make this trip a memorable. However, the trail and the lodges are far too crowded during Autumn. Spring ( Mar-May) is also considered as the most favorable season of the year as Autumn for Everest Base Camp Trek. You will have very similar weather condition during Spring with incredible flowering rhododendron covering the entire trekking hills.

But, Everest Base Camp Trek can be done throughout the year except in the peak Winter and Summer.

Food and Accommodation

It’s good news for your trekkers that you can even enjoy luxury accommodation and a large variety of meals during your Everest Base Camp Trek. Your accommodation is offered by local lodges. Normally, you have to share accommodation with second person. The lodges set the food menu and, accordingly, you are offered the food items following your demand. You will have the food items like continental, Indian, Tibetan, Asian, some Chinese and Japanese and Nepales items of food on the trekking route.  The accommodation is neat and the food items are very hygienic.

Since modern lodges and hotels are built on the Everest Base Camp Trekking Trail, you can choose to have luxury accommodation as well these days. If you like to enjoy luxury accommodation, you have to inform to the travel company which you are using for your Everest Base Camp Trek prior to the trek. And, definitely, it will be more costly than the ordinary accommodation.

Where does the trek begin and end?

The trek commences from Lukla after a short and scenic flight from Kathmandu and end at the same place.  The flight from Kathmandu to  Lukla lasts for 40 minutes. Alternatively, trekkers can take a Salleri Jeep ride and then begin their Everest Base Camp Trek but this jeep ride to Salleri or Bupsa is not possible during summer because of heavy rainfall which destroys the country roads.

What about Lukla Flight? Flights postponement or cancellation?

Lukla flight from Kathmandu and back to Kathmandu will be an incredible experience because  the mountain panoramas and the landscapes are visible. It lasts for 35-40 minutes. However, sometimes, the Lukla flights are disturbed. More specifically, during winter when the weather condition is not favorable because of heavy fog and snow and consequently the flights are either postponed or cancelled. If the same condition continues for few days, then, the flights are continuously postponed and some flights are even cancelled. Sometimes, hundreds of people are stranded in Lukla or in Kathmandu waiting for the flights. But this is not the case all the time. So, what people do to get rid of this nasty situation, they go with the jeep ride to Salleri or Bupsa and then continue their trek to Everest Base Camp and do the same while returning back to Kathmandu.

Required Permits

Trekkers must obtain two different permits for Everest Base Camp Trek. These are: TIMS Card ( Trekking Information Management Card) and Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit. One can obtain these two permits by visiting Nepal Tourism Board Office on his/her own. Or, you can simply ask your travel partner to obtain for you beforehand the trek. TIMS Card costs USD 10 and USD 30 for foreign tourists and USD 15 for SAARC nationals.

One has to provide a copy of passport and 2-4 pieces of recent passport sized photographs to prepare TIMS Card and Permits.

Major places to explore

The major places to explore during Everest Base Camp are: Lukla Town  and Lukla Airport, Namche Bazar and its surroundings, Thame Monastery, Khumjung Village, Tenjing Hillary School, Hotel Everest View, Tengboche town and Tengboche Monastery, Sagarmatha National Park, Dingboche Village, Chukkung Valley and Chukkung ri, Kalapatthar Hill and Everest Base Camp.

Experience and Preparations

You really don’t require being a veteran or professional trekker to do Everest Base Camp Trek. Even the beginners can do it if they have some trekking or hiking skills and they should be out of serious health issues. However, we recommend the trekkers who are undertaking their Everest Base Camp Trek to do short, easy or moderate hikes and treks prior to the trek. But it doesn’t mean that you require obtaining or learning all kinds of trekking skills to do Everest Base Camp Trek. Actually, Everest Base Camp Trek is graded as a moderate trek and at the same time, some people grade it as challenging. So, those who can walk 6-7 hours in a day at high altitude above 4000m can do this trek.

Be prepared with all the required trekking equipment and some skills of hiking and trekking for your Everest Base Camp Trek.

Acclimatization and Altitude sickness, a problem?

Not all the time altitude sickness will be a problem for the trekkers during Everest Base Camp Trek. But, we cannot completely deny that no altitude sicknesses will a problem. Yes, some cases of altitude sickness occur and trekkers have to give up their trek to Everest Base Camp. Proper acclimatization, having plenty of hot water and soups, having fresh and hygienic foods, avoiding drinking water for local taps and river and having sound sleep help you in avoiding altitude sickness. In case you have altitude sickness and the problem gets worsened, you will immediately be rescued. For that, you need to have an authentic travel insurance.

We have set our Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary with proper days for acclimatization because it is one of the most important aspects of designing a particular trekking itinerary. We will have two acclimatization days: one at Namche and the other at Dingboche  before we head for Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar. These two acclimatization days will help you acclimatize your body with new elevation amply and ease you to trek to Everest Base Camp.

Acute mountain sickness is sudden so that one has to adopt some important precautions:

  • Get elevation gradually with proper acclimatization
  • Address your health issues if you have beforehand the trek
  • Don’t smoke and drink a lot at higher elevation
  • Avoid having impure water and food during the trek
  • Use right and reliable trekking equipment
  • Have a sound sleep
  • Report immediately to the leader if you have any problem during the trek
  • Carry first-aid kit with some basic medicines

Internet, Phone and Wifi Services on the Trail

You can simply install local Nepali SIM card in your cellphone and take it to the mountain. You can also buy data pack to run internet on the trail. In fact, for some days at higher elevation, it may not work, but, it will help you a lot during the trek. You can buy either NT or NCELL Sim car and install call and internet on your phone. It will take no more than Rs.100 for you to get it.

You can also have the access of internet or Wi Fi on the trail at local lodges/teahouses. They may charge you Rs. 200-500 per password or per device.

You can even talk to your family, relatives and the friends from the Everest Base Camp Trekking Trail very easily and can share your images and the videos instantly.

Can Solo traveler do this Trek?

No. Solo traveler cannot do Everest Base Camp Trek. No solo traveler is permitted to do trekking in any trekking area in Nepal by the government. Also, the group has to be accompanied at least a guide during the trek. It means, without hiring an authorized and licensed guide, the group is not allowed to go on Everest Base Camp Trekking trail. We arrived at Kathmandu airport with only the plan that we wanted to do the 3 passes trek, we hadn’t actually organised anything, and were even thinking we would only need a guide for parts of the trek. Milan met us at the airport by chance, rode with us in our taxi to our hotel and said he’d be happy to help us with the whole trek, but without forcing us to use his company. We don’t regret a thing - we paid one very good price which included a guide from Kathmandu for the whole trek, the flights to and from Lukla, accomodation in lodges and teahouses and 3 meals a day. Milan even included paragliding, bunjee jumping and white water rafting in this same price. The trek was stunning, lucky enough to have perfect weather for the most part. We also couldn’t have asked for a better guide, Rajan was perfect for us, took us at our pace and taught us so much about Nepal and the culture that we never would’ve been able to learn without him. He became not only a brilliant companion but a good friend who we hope to see again. Once we arrived back in Kathmandu after the trek he even took us to his sister’s home and we were given a perfect home cooked Dhal bhat - a real treat after all the mountain food we’d been having. Overall, Himalayan Spirit Adventure has turned out to be a very good find, and Milan an excellent organiser and very fair businessman. He’s even taking us out to dinner tonight! We are very pleased and happy that our 2months in Nepal has started so well. Thank you Milan and the team!

Nice tour very Well organised from Kathmandu I spent 11 days in Langtang which was beautiful going two times over 4000 meters !! The guide was very kind and professionnal and helped me to go through that challenge. Im very thankful to him for that. After I saw beautiful mountain from Nagakrot and had the chance to chill 3 days in Pokhara. The company is very arranging as they accept to change my hotel for a better one in the center. You can trust them for your next trip Nepal if you want to be well accompanied ;)

We really liked the trip Milan organized for us. We met him at the airport and we discussed our wishes at his office in Kathmandu. We did a nice hiking tour from Pokhara to Australian Basecamp in the Annapurna highlands. After that we did a nice rafting tour and a safari near Chitwan. Milan was always available for questions and we didn't need to be worry about anything. I can recommend him very much.

Our trek to Everest Base Camp with Himalayan Spirit Adventure Treks and Expeditions was exceptional! We were lucky to have one of Nepal’s greatest and best known guides - Jagat (“Kaji”). He knew Everest like the back of his hand, having been a guide and Sherpa for over 50 years. Everyone along the trek knew him well and we were warmly welcomed by his colleagues and friends everywhere we went. He was so respected and known that he was able to use his connections to achieve what we simply couldn’t do ourselves (eg. Getting us on return flights from Lukla on a different airline at no cost, when there was no availability with the company we had tickets to). He spoke some English and was able to tailor our trip to our needs. He is an incredibly kind, giving and caring person. Whilst he was much older than us, and we consider ourselves fairly active and fit, he set a comfortable pace and we felt so incredibly lucky to have experienced the Everest trek with him. DB (family to Kaji), organised everything before our trip, including flights and pick up. He set out our itinerary and made sure it was what we needed, and that nothing was left out. He even contacted us periodically through our trek to ensure we were well and didn’t need anything. This company is a LOCAL company, employing LOCAL people, ensuring the money returns to the LOCAL community. Whilst you may be tempted to trek with a big foreign company for peace of mind, I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed by this company as it’s fantastic and the people are genuine and wonderful. Thank you especially to Kaji. We would love to see you soon.

Through our accommodation in Thamel, we were introduced to manager Dh, who immediately informed us about the different trekking options. We went for a drink to discuss the routes again and he told us about the career of the agency. We finally decided on the Manaslu trek, which we unfortunately had to postpone for 2 days due to an illness. Dh was helpful and understanding, so it was no problem to postpone the tour at very short notice. The Manaslu Circuit Tour would have been unimaginable without Madhu, our guide. He organized spontaneously and reliably the accommodations and the daily stages and was always a good companion. Madhu knew the area and the people of the surroundings very well, so he did not have a map with him. If you value getting an overview of the route, you should carry one yourself. On the whole, a good price-performance ratio, a helpful crew who knows their business!

We arrived to Nepal thinking about doing this trek on our own, but in the end we thought the piece of mind of having everything arranged for us (route, sleeping places, etc.) would make the trip more worth it. We were right! Milan and his team made sure we had all perfectly planned, but also had space to make adjustments based on our adaptation to the altitude and spontaneous decisions based on our interests (I'm a photographer so I took my time on each place.) Our guide/porter made sure we achieved our goal of reaching the Everest Base Camp safely. When I had complications adapting to the altitude of over 5000 meters, he reacted promptly, knowing exactly what to do. As I plan to come back to Nepal in a few years (this time to do a summit), I would trust on this company again and I recommend it whether you want to do a short trek or one of +2 weeks.

Such an unforgettable experience. I arrived to Nepal on a whim with no real plan on what i wanted to get out of the trip. I was introduced to Milan and his team who created a unique and thrilling experience for me which would last the duration of my trip. I paid a single fee and EVERYTHING else was taken care of by Milan and his team. Milan and the team were very flexible and helped me in any way they could with information about Kathmandu, local deals and even arranged my PCR tests. Literally everything was taken care of by Milans team. It was fantastic. I will most certainly come back to Nepal and will 100% be with Himalayan Spirit Adventure Treks & Expeditions again. Though this time i will arrive as a friend rather than a customer. Thank you once again Milan!

Milan and his team made our trip to Kathmandu unforgettable. My travel partner and I got to the country having no idea what to do and how we would navigate the city until Milan came in and saved the day. His team went above and beyond to make sure we didn't have to do any logistics and could just enjoy our vacation. With knowledgeable tour guides and the best hospitality in the city, Milan gave us an insider's view of Nepal with an experience that left us feeling like family.
